DOL Announces the Availability of $474 Million in Grant Funding for Community Colleges and Higher Education Institutions

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL or the Department) announces the availability of approximately $474 million in grant funds to be awarded under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant program.

The TAACCCT grant program provides community colleges and higher education institutions with funds to expand and improve their ability to deliver education and career training programs that can be completed in two years or less, and are suited for workers who are eligible for training under the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for Workers.

The Department intends to fund four-year grants to develop new undergraduate education and career training program strategies or to replicate existing designs, program development methods, and/or delivery strategies that have established evidence of successful implementation.  The primary focus of this funding opportunity is to help TAA-eligible workers and other adults acquire the skills, degrees, and credentials needed for high-wage, high-skill employment while also meeting the needs of employers for skilled workers.

This year, there is a special focus on technologies that can enable education and training of these workers.  This includes skillful use of technology-enabled new, emergent models of online education and workforce training, such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs); prior learning assessments; and online and blended learning environments that allow larger numbers of workers to participate. Videoconferencing equipment, recording and streaming technology, as well as other technologies are eligible.

For more information, access the Full Announcement (pdf format).  The deadline is June 18 for single institution applications, and July 3 for consortium applications.

April 2013 VCI-Group President’s Message

April 2013 VCI-Group President’s Message

Our (VCI-Group’s) responsibility to YOU as our members is to provide you with information regarding what is happening in the industry, to make you aware of the companies that are “best in breed” and to make you aware of any discounts we have negotiated.

I urge you to go to the VCI-Group website (http://www.vci-group.org/membership/membershipdiscounts.aspx) to review the promotions and discounts we have negotiated for you; they range from equipment purchases to educational opportunities.  These offerings will continue to grow and we will make them available to you through email messages and our newsletter.  However, you should visit the website periodically to see what has been added.

I also, encourage you to participate in the webinars that we are hosting.  Our WebRTC webinar was well attended and received. Many of you have requested additional information on how to build, implement and deploy.  In the near future, we will offer accredited training sessions on WebRTC, BYOD and many more topics in conjunction with one of our Alliance Partners.  You will be able to train at a time that is convenient to you and without having to leave your home or office.

In addition to our monthly VCIG Live! webinars our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) have begun to meet.  The first was the Healthcare SIG and coming in April is our Distance Learning SIG.  Each of these sessions will have a Chairperson and agenda topics to guide the conversation. They will be recorded and posted for you to view at your leisure.

Other new items include two spotlights; the first will be a webinar from a member of our Circle of Leadership who will discuss a particular product or service and the second will be a newsletter article which will highlight a VCI-Group Member offering  an opportunity to see the exciting things that some of our peers are doing.

Another new program soon to be introduced is an Emerging Technologies Corner webinar initiated as a result of the vast number of new  companies entering our industry in just the past few months.  You will hear about new products and services and determine for yourself if they could add value in your organization.

To keep abreast of all that we are doing and what is available to you visit the VCI-Group website, http://www.vci-group.org/Home.aspx on a regular basis.
